How to Win Ludo: 7 Strategies That Actually Work (No Lucky-Number Myths)

Honest Ludo strategy. What genuinely improves your odds — token spread, capture timing, safe squares and the maths of the dice — and the superstitions to ignore.

Search "how to win Ludo every time" and you'll find a hundred posts about lucky numbers, "due" sixes, and rolling the dice a special way. All of it is nonsense. Ludo's dice are random — every face has a 1-in-6 chance every single roll, no matter what came before. So is Ludo pure luck? No. The dice are luck, but every decision — which token to move, when to capture, when to hide — is skill. Here are seven strategies that actually raise your win rate.

First, accept what you can't control

You cannot make a six appear. You cannot make a number "due". Hot and cold streaks are illusions from watching small samples of random rolls. The sooner you stop chasing lucky patterns, the sooner you start winning more — by out-deciding your opponents, not out-rolling them.

Strategy 1: Spread your tokens

Racing a single token forward feels fast, but one capture sends it all the way home and wipes your progress. Keeping two or three tokens in play makes you resilient and gives you more options every turn — a roll that's useless for one token is often perfect for another.

Strategy 2: Open a second token the moment you can

When you roll a six early, resist the urge to sprint one token ahead. Bring out a second token instead. Two runners beat one almost every time, because a single unlucky capture no longer ends your game.

Strategy 3: Time your captures for maximum damage

A capture is only as good as the progress it erases. Capturing an opponent's token two steps out of their yard barely stings. Capturing one that's nearly home is devastating — it can cost them 50+ squares of progress. Save your captures for where they hurt most.

Strategy 4: Use safe squares as shelter

Star-marked squares (and each player's coloured start square) are safe — a token there can't be captured. Plan your moves so vulnerable tokens land on safe squares when opponents are within striking range. Think of them as checkpoints, not just decoration. The full list of where they sit is in our Ludo rules.

Strategy 5: Read the whole board before you move

Before committing a move, scan for any opponent token within six squares of yours — those are both threats and opportunities. The exact-count rule near home also means you should line up the right distance a few turns in advance, not at the last second.

Strategy 6: Block when the rules allow it

If your group plays with the block/barrier variation, parking two same-colour tokens on one square creates a wall opponents can't pass. Dropped on a busy stretch of track, a block can stall a rival for several turns. Just confirm everyone's playing that variation before you start.

Strategy 7: Adapt to the mode you're playing

Classic Ludo rewards patience and board control. Quick mode — where tokens start out and the first one home wins — rewards aggression: take the fast lane and worry less about captures. Match your style to the format. You can try both in online Ludo.

The honest truth about "winning every time"

Nobody wins Ludo every time — the dice guarantee that. But a player who spreads tokens, times captures, uses safe squares, and reads the board will beat a careless player over a run of games, comfortably. That's the real answer to "how to win Ludo": stop hunting luck, start making better moves.
