How to Win Ludo: 9 Real Strategies

What actually improves your odds — and what's just superstition.

You can't control the dice, but you decide which token to move and when. That's where games are won. Here are nine strategies that genuinely raise your win rate — and a couple of myths to drop.

1. Spread your tokens — don't race just one

Keeping two or three tokens in play means a single capture won't set you all the way back. It also gives you more choices each turn, so a useless roll for one token is often useful for another.

2. Open a second token early

The moment you roll a 6, strongly consider bringing out another token rather than sprinting one ahead. Two runners are far more resilient than one.

3. Use safe squares as stepping stones

Plan moves so vulnerable tokens land on star squares when opponents are near. A token on a safe square can't be captured — it buys you time.

4. Capture when it sets an opponent back meaningfully

A capture near an opponent's home is devastating; a capture two steps out of their yard barely matters. Spend your captures where they cost the opponent the most progress.

5. Watch the whole board, not just your lead token

Before moving, scan for opponent tokens within six squares of yours — both threats to you and chances to capture. The exact-count rule near home also means you should set up the right distance in advance.

6. Don't over-commit a token near home

Tokens close to home but needing an exact roll can get stuck. Keep a backup token moving so you always have a legal play.

7. Block when the rules allow it

If you're playing with the block/barrier variation (two same-colour tokens on one square), a block placed on a busy stretch can stall an opponent for several turns. Confirm the rules your group is using.

8. In Quick mode, prioritise speed over safety

Quick mode rewards the first token home, so play more aggressively — take the fast lane and worry less about captures than in Classic.

9. Play more games, not “lucky” ones

There are no lucky numbers and no due numbers. The only reliable edge is consistently making the better decision, game after game.

Frequently asked questions

Is Ludo a game of skill or luck?

Both. The dice are luck, but which token you move, when you capture, when you shelter on a safe square, and how you spread your tokens are all decisions — and good decisions win more games over time. You can't control the dice, but you can control everything else.

Can you win Ludo every time?

No — anyone claiming a guaranteed win is selling superstition. Dice are random. But solid strategy meaningfully raises your win rate across many games, which is the honest version of 'how to win more'.

Are there lucky numbers in Ludo?

No. Each die roll is independent and every face has a 1-in-6 chance, regardless of what came before. Party Ludo's dice are server-decided with verifiable commit-reveal, so there are no patterns to exploit.

Which token should I move first?

Generally, get a second token out early so a single capture doesn't wipe out your only runner. Beyond that, prioritise tokens that can capture, reach a safe square, or are close to home.
