Every Ludo table has the same argument: whoever went first had it easier. It is usually said by whoever went last. We could not find a real answer anywhere, so we built a Ludo engine and ran 240,000 complete games — 120,000 with four players and 120,000 with two.
The short version: in 2-player Ludo the first player wins 54.99% of the time. In 4-player Ludo, turn order is worth almost nothing. The gap between those two facts is the interesting part.
2-player Ludo: going first is worth 5 percentage points
Across 120,000 two-player games:

That is not noise. With this many games the standard error is about 0.14pp, which puts the result roughly 35 standard errors from chance. If you play a best-of-three against one opponent and the same person starts every game, you have handed them a real edge.
The fix is not complicated: alternate who starts each game, the way you would with chess colours. Most families already re-roll for it, which turns out to be the right instinct.
4-player Ludo: it barely matters
Across 120,000 four-player games, expected win rate 25%:

Going first is worth +0.44 percentage points — real, but roughly a tenth of the 2-player advantage. Playing last costs −0.68pp. Both are statistically significant only because the sample is enormous; at the scale of a family game night, neither is something you would ever notice.
Why the difference? With two players, one turn of head start is half of all turns taken before your opponent moves, and there is exactly one person who can capture you back. With four, the same head start is spread across three opponents and captures arrive from every direction, which washes it out.
How long a game of Ludo actually takes

Those are total player-turns, not turns each. A 4-player Classic game runs about 97 turns per person. It is why Quick mode exists.
Captures matter less than everyone thinks
Ludo tables treat a capture as the decisive moment. The numbers are more modest. In 4-player games winners averaged 7.17 captures and non-winners 6.68 — a gap of about 7%. Winning players do capture more, but not nearly by enough to explain the win.
In 2-player games the gap is proportionally larger — 2.04 against 1.22 — which fits the same pattern as turn order: with one opponent, every individual action counts for more.
Most losses are near-misses
How far losing players got in 4-player games:

Two thirds of losing players finish with at least half their tokens home. The feeling that you almost had it is not a bias — it is usually accurate.
Method, and where these numbers stop applying
We say this plainly because a number without a method is just a claim.
- What was simulated: 240,000 complete games — 120,000 four-player and 120,000 two-player — under standard Classic rules. Four tokens each, a six needed to leave base, a six grants another roll, exact roll required to finish, captures send a token back to base, start and starred squares are safe, and two tokens of one colour on a square cannot be captured.
- One rule we had to pick a side on. On three consecutive sixes, we ended the turn and forfeited only the third roll — the first two moves stand. Our own rules page describes the stricter variant where all three are cancelled. We did not model that one. Three sixes in a row happens on roughly 1 turn in 216, so the choice is unlikely to move these results, but you should know which version produced them.
- Every seat played identically. All players used the same move-selection policy — prefer a capture, then a token that can finish exactly, then bringing a token out on a six, then safety, then progress. This matters: because the policy is identical for everyone, any difference in win rate is attributable to turn order and nothing else.
- The dice were checked. Over 600,000 rolls the distribution gave a chi-square of 5.32 against a 95% critical value of 11.07, and simulated odds of avoiding a six over 3, 6 and 10 rolls matched the analytic values to within 0.11%.
- What this is not. These are simulated games, not records of human play. Real players are inconsistent, play house rules, and make emotional captures. Treat the direction and rough size of these effects as reliable, and the second decimal place as an artefact of the model.
What to actually do with this
- Playing 1-v-1? Alternate who starts. It is worth about five percentage points a game, which is more than any tactic on our tips page will get you.
- Playing with four? Stop arguing about seats. The effect is under one percentage point and you will never see it.
- Chasing captures? Worth doing, but it is not the lever you think. Getting a second token out early does more — see the dice probability page.
